Today we're making urad daal - a mild, creamy and vegetarian Indian dish that can feed the whole family.
It's an authentic Gujarati recipe - easy to make and easy to eat!
What you'll need:
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
4 shallots, chopped
1/2 tsp asafoetida, also known as hing
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 chili, chopped (🔥 - if you like!)
2oz ginger, chopped or grated
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp red chili powder
1/2 tsp salt 🧂
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp garam masala
2 tsp dhana jeera (ground cumin & coriander)
1/2 tin of chopped tomato
1 fresh tomato, chopped 🍅
200g urad (black lentils) - see below for how to prepare
2 tbsp yoghurt
Coriander to taste
If you don't have all the spices, don't worry - use what you do have!
Like all Indian dishes, urad daal goes perfectly with chapatis, poppadoms or other breads - I'll post a video very soon on how to make those at home.
(And if you buy those ready-to-cook or ready-to-eat, that's fine too!)
How to prepare the urad (black lentils)
200g urad
500ml of water
1/2 tsp of salt
Heat in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes, or until the cooker whistles four times. You can see from this video what it looks like when it's ready.
