While a full(er) ROM air squat is a key athletic skill to develop, full and partial ROM progressions with a box for support can also have a place in training. You may want to consider high and/or low box squats when rehabbing/prehabbing an injury or imbalance, developing basic lower body strength and/or mobility, targeting 1 small part of the movement such as the final quarter ROM.
In general, the high and/or low box squat may be a necessary progression for some people to work on when building up to full ROM air squats and weighted back squats. Whether you're coming back from injury or starting from scratch, you can always start here to be safe, and gradually add more weight, speed, ROM, etc.
