Take action on climate change at http://countdown.ted.com . Why has there been so little mention of saving Black lives from the climate emergency? For too long, racial justice efforts have been distinguished from climate justice work, says David Lammy, Member of Parliament for Tottenham, England. In a stirring talk about building a new movement to care for the planet, Lammy calls for inclusion and support of Black and minority leadership on climate issues and a global recognition that we can't solve climate change without racial, social and intergenerational justice. This talk was part of the Countdown Global Launch on 10.10.2020. (Watch the full event here: /watch/).YwbjN8ncVd5cw Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. @DoloresJNurss4 years ago I' d like to know where the university of michigan claimed that only 12% of american environmental leaders aren' t white, because if they did say i think this is an important example of what the speaker calls being " cropped out of the picture" or perhaps their criteria foractivist group" didn' t include groups defined by some academic definition that ignores size, persistence, effectiveness, and a high degree of organization for some other peculiar standard. I' m frankly puzzled. ...Expand 7

@milana33024 years ago At first i saw the title and listened to the beginning of the video and click on dislike because it was unbearable.
then i forced myself to listen although this video does not deserve a like either.
    what' s the matter?
    1) climate justice and racial justice are different things. You can' t mix them up, you can' t try to solve one problem with another. It' s like blaming the bad taste of a oversalty cake on a bad oven.
    2) the video has good ideas. Like the fact that poor people suffer the most from pollution. But it' s not just black peeople. White people suffer from this too, as much as asians, australoids and all others. Don' t blame people for what they didn' t do.
how can you fix it? Change the headline, for example " how climate change affects black peeople" or " how climate change is related to racialor " why climate change is more affecting disadvantaged groups" or smth like that. And, of course, there is no need to push one problem to another.
ted is becoming more and more like a company trying to make money than a company trying to change the world and make it better. Please, spotlight the problem, don' t try to make benefit from it

@dkt64084 years ago If a minority is affected more by a problem than the majority,
then solving the problem itself is a better solution than helping more the minority. all problems should be solved equally, indifferent of the minority or the majority, except if the problem is directly tied to minority majority conflicts.
solving climate change first will also solve the climate change affect inequality,
solving just the climate change affect inequality wont do much.
i' m all for equality, and equality problems should be solved equally
edit: while this video is not that good, please don' t use it as a representation of people wanting equality and blm.
and remember to always treat the other side of an argument with respect

@juneo51444 years ago This video is actually inspiring and enlightening! I think more people should watch this video and realize that we need to do something to remove the id="hidden16" inequality and injustice behind the climate change issue. Many people don' t think about the far-reaching negative impact which their country is making. It is obviously true that more advantaged people in northern hemisphere use more energy and this has deadly effect on disadvantaged people in southern hemisphere, who didn' t make any contribution to the current severe climate problem. It is unfair. ...Expand 2

@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism4 years ago Native americans are unquestionably victims of environmental racism. The commission for racial justice found that about 50 percent of all american indians for native american tribes, the issues can be complicatedand their solutions hard to attainbecause of the complicated governmental issues arising from a history ofdisenfranchisement. Unlike other racial minorities in the united states, native american tribes are sovereign nations. However, much of their land is held in trust, meaning that the federal government holds title to the land in trust on behalf of the tribe (bureau of indian affairs 2012) some instances of environmental damage arise from this crossover, where the u. S. Governments title has meant it acts without approval of the tribal government. Other significant contributors to environmental racism as experienced by tribes are forcible removal and burdensome red tape to receive the same reparation benefits afforded to non-indians.
to better understand how this happens, lets consider a few example cases. The home of the skull valley band of goshute indians was targeted as the site for a high-level nuclear waste dumping ground, amid allegations of a payoff of as high as $200 million (kamps 2001) keith lewis, an indigenous advocate for indian rights, commented on this buyout, after his people endured decades of uranium contamination, saying that there is nothing moral about tempting a starving man with money (kamps 2001) in another example, the western shoshones yucca mountain area has been pursued by mining companies for its rich uranium stores, a threat that adds to the existing radiation exposure this area suffers from u. S. And british nuclear bomb testing (environmental justice case studies 2004) in the four corners area where colorado, utah, arizona, and new mexico meet, a group of hopi and navajo families have been forcibly removed from their homes so the land could be mined by the peabody mining company for coal valued at $10 billion (american indian cultural support 2006) years of uranium mining on the lands of the navajo of new mexico have led to serious health consequences, and reparations have been difficult to secure; in addition to the loss of life, peoples homes and other facilities have been contaminated (frosch 2009) in yet another case, members of the chippewa near white pine, michigan, were unable to stop the transport of hazardous sulfuric acid across reservation lands, but their activism helped bring an end to the mining project that used the acid (environmental justice case studies 2004)
these examples are only a few of the hundreds of incidents that american indian tribes have faced and continue to battle against. Sadly, the mistreatment of the lands original inhabitants continues via this institution of environmental racism. How might the work of sociologists help draw attention toand eventually mitigatethis social problem?

    what really is privilege?
privilege is wearing $200 sneakers when youve never had a job.
privilege is wearing $300 beats headphones while living on public assistance.
privilege is having a smartphone with a data plan, which you receive no bill for.
privilege is living in public subsidized housing where you dont have a utility or phone bill and where rising property taxes, rents and energy costs have absolutely no effect on the amount of food you can put on your table, which is largely covered by government food stamps.
privilege is having free health insurance for you and your family that' s paid for by working taxpayers who often can' t afford proper health coverage for their own families.
privilege is having multiple national organizations promoting and protecting just your race alone - that are subsidized by federal tax dollars.
privilege is having access to a national college fund that supports only your race.
privilege is having a television network that supports only one race.
privilege is having most of the media news networks refuse to cover incidents wherein one race (one-eighth of the population) commits 50% of the crimes.
privilege is the ability to go march against, and protest against anything that triggers you, without worrying about calling off from work and the consequences that accompany such.
privilege is having as many children as you want, regardless of your employment status, and be able to send them off to daycare or pre-school you dont pay for.
privilege is being able to vote in many states without showing a driver' s license, voter id card or other credentials - just because your race claims they should be exempt from such requirements.
privilege is being able to riot, loot, commit arson and tear down historic monuments without consequences - just because you don' t like folks such as columbus, u. S. Grant or even lincoln.
privilege is having most of your life paid for by the working men and women who do have to deal with rising taxes and costs! You know, those you now call privileged

@nickchase91504 years ago People of color, who are the least contributors to carbon emissions, are the most vulnerable in this climate crisis.
" climate crisis is the also, most of modernin the advent of massive animal farms and factories, that are also owned by most white men, are located outside white continents but mostly built on poor countries for cheap labor and lucrative profit, which again countries mostly people of color or the global south.
this issue is not divisive. The issue of race is pivotal in enlightening people' s understanding on the gravity of the climate issue. Most, white people do not recognized that because they' re not in places that have been hit the hardest by natural disasters that have been strengthened even more by the rise of temperatures all over the globe. Also, this is scientific because nasa' s live footage of carbon emitters comes from the global north mostly white men. China' s contribution are mostly factories to cater white countries.
