Simon Peyton Jones was a key contributor to the design of the now-standard functional language Haskell, and is the lead designer of the widely-used Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC). Simon’s main research interest is in functional programming languages, their implementation, and their application. He has written two textbooks about the implementation of functional languages. He is particularly motivated by direct application of principled theory to practical language design and implementation — that is one reason he loves functional programming so much. In this fireside chat, Vimal Kumar - founder and CEO at Juspay - will be in conversation with Simon to discuss: What inspired Simon to build Haskell/GHC, and sharing some insightful learnings in this journey. Haskell/GHC as a balance of great engineering and a work of art - how did Simon balance both? Advice to software engineers working with Haskell about overcoming initial learning hurdles, importance of practice and developing mastery. Contributing to the Haskell ecosystem and the way forward. This event is organized as part of Juspay’s efforts to build the Functional Programming (FP) ecosystem in India. https://hasgeek.com/FP-Juspay/simon-peyton-jones/
