In the third episode of the Philosophy of Language and Law Podcast, we indulged ourselves in the study of signs with our discussion of Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913). Saussure's work was instrumental in establishing the structuralist tradition in philosophy. His explanation as to why the relationship between words and the concepts they denote is arbitrary, and that words do not intrinsically relate to objects were some influential ideas that shaped most thought that succeeded him. We discuss many of the key concepts in Saussure's work like diachronic and synchronic language, langue and parole, etc.
