Jerry argues with Rod about the fact that the offer from Arizona is insultingly low, so Rod opts to play out the final year of his current contract and be a free agent next year. Jerry tells him that he did everything to get him a new contract from Arizona and is upset. Later, Jerry goes to work and tells Dorothy that the last night spent together was a mistake. Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible, Top Gun and Rain Man), a glossy sports agent, writes a mission statement about perceived dishonesty in the sports management business but is then fired for it. Consequently, he calls all of his clients to try and convince them to stay with him. Jerry manages to keep only Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr. from What dreams may come and Men of honor). Leaving the office, Jerry announces that he will start his own agency and asks if anyone is willing to join him, to which only Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger from One True Thing and Bridget Jones’ Diary) agrees. He becomes closer to Dorothy’s young son Ray (Jonathan Lipnicki from Stuart Little), and eventually starts a relationship with her. Later they agree to get married. Jerry concentrates all his efforts on Rod, now his only client, who turns out to be very difficult to satisfy. Rod takes Jerry's advice to prove he is worthy of his contract. Meanwhile, Jerry's marriage with Dorothy gradually deteriorates and they eventually separate. During a Football game, Rod plays well, securing a spot for the Cardinals in the playoffs. Afterwards, Jerry and Rod show how their relationship has progressed from a strictly business one to a close personal one, which was one of the points Jerry made in his mission statement.
